The big question is can I do the keto diet with diabetes and the answer is YES, you can do ketogenic diet with diabetes! In fact, it is the only diet that has been shown to reduce the need for insulin or other medications and reverse diabetes. Dr. Ken Berry has a ton of really great information about several studies showing that adults currently on medication for diabetes no only lost weight but were able to lower their A1c, stop insulin, and sometimes completely stop medications for controlling their diabetes. He reports it is the only way to stop diabetes.

In this video, I will discuss the general concept of the keto diet and some tips to transition easier into ketosis. I will warn you that this diet takes dedication. For years, you have pushed tons of carbs and sugar into your body following the standard american diet. Foods that you consider to be healthy are actually stacked with hidden carbs and sugars which causes your body to have unstable insulin levels. By resetting your system and refocusing on good fats, protein, and low carb veggies your body convert back to the fat burning system that it was designed to be!

Many “experts” say how unhealthy this lifestyle is but I challenge you to consider this. Prior to the industrial revolution, it was much less common for people to have diabetes. In fact, only the very wealthy (not active) had any signs of diabetes. People ate meat, vegetables, and fruits as they could but a very limited supply of sugary treats were available. The carbs they did eat were burned away by hard work and constant activity. In order to lose weight, you must greatly decrease your carbs and sugars so that you burn off the abundance that your body has stored. This will take longer than you will probably like but by being consistent with a low carb lifestyle will help you to lose weight and reset your body to burn fat.

The biggest secret is to eat more of the good stuff and none of the bad. When i mean eat more, i mean a lot more of things we have been taught to fear. Eat the fat…a lot of good fats. Cut out all the processed fats…corn oil, miracle whip, American cheese slices, and so much more. Add in real butter, olive oil, avocados, eggs, and so much more. Push these good fats into EVERYTHING! Then start reading labels and find all of those hidden sugars. Research the different ways they call sugar too–the good ones are stevia, erythritol, monk fruit and then the really bad ones are high fructose corn syrup, agave, honey, dates, coconut sugar, maple syrup, brown and white sugar, maltitol, xylitol, fructose, dextrose, saccharin, & aspartame.

Some push “clean keto” and others do “lazy keto”. My advise is to start with lazy keto while you are learning things and clearing out foods you have already purchased. If you can donate the bad stuff, get it out of the house. Once it is gone, do NOT buy it again. That is when you need to start investing into better stuff for you. Convert to almond flour, monk fruit for sugar, extra virgin olive oil for vegetable oil and so on. Once you get things switched out it is so much easier to convert your favorite meals into keto versions that will keep you healthy for the long haul. I do not support dieting. This is a lifestyle change for longevity. You can rewrite your story if you are truly ready to live differently!

As always, discuss changes to your doctor so they can monitor and adjust medications accordingly. Keto acidosis is a very dangerous condition that is usually risky for insulin dependent diabetics. Please monitor your sugar accurately and regularly and make adjustments with your doctor as needed. Do not disregard medical advice.
