In this video, Dr. Berg talks about intermittent fasting, low carbohydrate and your thyroid. The pituitary gland sends a message down to the thyroid in the base of the neck about 2 and a half inches wide. The gland that triggers the main thyroid hormone is being controlled by the pituitary by TSH or Thyroid Stimulating Hormone. The thyroid then releases the hormone called T4 (an inactive thyroid hormone), 4 which represents the number of iodine molecules. He also talks about what influences these hormones.

What Affects T3 and T4 hormones:
• Low Carbohydrate Diet and Fasting – Could cause low normal T3. Simply because T3 is constantly getting feedback to the environment.
• Stress and Infection – Could cause an alteration on the thyroid stimulating hormone, low T3 and T4.

Hey I am back. Today we are gonna talk about intermittent fasting, lower carbohydrates and your thyroid. Many times you’ll hear from someone that it is dangerous for your thyroid to do low carbohydrates or fasting, It’s what destroys the thyroid. That is absolutely not true. Let me first kind of give you the basics, you have this thing called the pituitary, the small gland in your brain, like the size of a pea. And it sends a message down to the thyroid, it controls the thyroid. Thyroid is at the base of the neck right here, it is about 2 and a half inches wide, it comes from the latin word which means shield because it looks like a shield. So this gland that is triggering the main thyroid hormone is being controlled by the pituitary through something called the thyroid stimulating hormone. Pretty much describe what it is right? So then the thyroid releases its main hormone called T4. The 4 represents the number of iodine molecules, so T4 is an inactive thyroid hormone. It has to be activated to make it work and 80% of the activation happens to the liver and 20% happens to the kidney. So what happens is when it gets activated through a certain enzymes, it strips of iodine and becomes T3. T3 is the active form of thyroid hormone. T3 does its job and its has everything to do with the metabolism in speeding things up and making things work to pretty much all the cells. When it does it job, it sends a signal back to the pituitary complying with this order, completing the action and then this can turn off. We have this whole feedback system that’s dependent on a lot of different things, the environment, food, etc. Now it is true that there are certain things that will influence this hormones, like a low carbohydrate diet and fasting can cause a low normal T3. That is the active form, it is not necessary abnormal but it could be low normal, still within the range. Why would it be low normal? Simply because T3 is constantly getting feedback from the environment. If you ea a lot of food, it has to speed up to keep up with the metabolism, if you eat less food or less frequent food it can slow down. What you are gonna find is the thyroid stimulating hormone is gonna be normal and this is how they diagnose a hypothyroid problem. It is gonna be normal and T4 is gonna be normal too.
